Understanding the H2.0® Purification Program

The H2.0® Purification Program is JEA’s aquifer replenishment solution that involves water sustainability to ensure safe water for generations to come.
Aquifer replenishment provides an efficient and cost-effective approach to preserving our aquifer's quality and quantity.
The purification process further purifies available reclaimed water to drinking water quality so it can be used to replenish the aquifer.
Let’s explore how it all works!
The Utility Water Cycle
How H2.O® Purification Fits Into our Water System
Go a Layer Deeper: Let's take a journey through our water cycle, starting deep within the Floridan Aquifer. With each step, we're not just providing our community with water, we're safeguarding our future.
How We Purify Water
Before reclaimed water is conveyed to the H2.0® Purification Center, it has already been treated at a JEA Water Reclamation Facility to a high level so it can be used for irrigation. A portion of the reclaimed water that JEA customers do not use is the water supply source of H2.0®. At the H2.0® Purification Center, water is purified through three primary steps.
Membrane Filtration
This first step utilizes a specialized barrier, known as a membrane, to remove unwanted substances (particulate and other constituents).
Reverse Osmosis
This is the heart of the process. Water pumps apply pressure to force water through a semipermeable membrane that blocks contaminants but allows clean water to pass through, effectively removing impurities down to the molecular level.
UV Advanced Oxidation
Finally, an oxidant is added, in combination with ultraviolet light, which reacts to remove remaining contaminants while disinfecting the water.
The result? Clean, purified water
From there, the water is stabilized by adding minerals (hardness and alkalinity) back to the water. Dissolved oxygen is removed, and then the water can be returned back to the aquifer.
Our Purification Center
The JEA H2.0®Purification Center will house this industry-leading process, educate visitors, train JEA employees, and help us ensure a sustainable future for Northeast Florida.
